Holy cow Belize was a whirlwind adventure! It’s a small country, but there is so much to see. It didn’t help that we gave up our final week here for a work trip, but that’s just what we’re doing right now.
Ok, let’s get into the stats!
Days in Country: 12, but was supposed to be 18
Miles Driven: 658
Nights spent indoors: 3, two on the island and one to recover from the island
Things we weren’t expecting: There are so many Asian food places here! That was a nice surprise for us. There are very few mosquitos here. It looks like it should be mosquito central, but for some reason (they probably spray) there are almost none. The paved roads are in great condition. The general vibe is really relaxed and the people are incredibly friendly, you feel it as soon as you cross the border. For several reasons, a majority of the houses are built on stilts (flooding, keeps bugs out, keeps the inside cooler). The weather at night was unexpected, if you went inland and up only a couple hundred feet, it would cool right off by bed time. Also, who knew there would be so many Mennonites?!
Things we didn’t enjoy: This place is amazing, and so friendly, our only complaint is that it is expensive compared to Mexico, especially the gas at $6+/gallon.
Some things we recommend:
Caracol Ruins. Amazing
Big Rock Waterfall
Orange Walk. So incredibly friendly!
Caye Caulker
Snorkeling Hol Chan Marine Reserve Tour
How we got here:
Ok, now on to Guatemala for jungles and volcanoes!
