Argentina really is it’s own very different place. It’s very Western, and very European. When we arrived they were in the midst of economic turnaround, so everything was very expensive compared to other countries. The Mercader Projection really does not do the size ofthis country justice, its GIGANTIC. This country was the official end of the Pan-American Highway, and where we had those most mechanical trouble. We also met the dog we regret not stealing in Argentina…
Days in Country: 85 days!! We were in Argentina on and off from February 3 – November 2. But in full transparency, 26 of those days were spent back in the USA
Miles Driven: 11,752, holy crap, that’s so many!!
Nights spent indoors: 10
Things we weren’t expecting:
The food here is incredible! They are experts in all things meat and wine. They have the best empanadas, hands down (our theory is because they have the best meat). All the cuts are different than what we are used to. At first we tried to compare to what we knew, but once we leaned into it, we had the most incredible cuts of meat. Being a very large country, there were multiple geographic regions, similar to North America. Our favorite were the mountains, and the Antofagasta (which included a lot of mountains). There are so, so many wild vicuna, and rheas, which was very fun to see.
Things we didn’t enjoy:
The east coast of Argentina in the winter is very dreary, do not recommend. The roads, overall, were some of the worst of this trip. There were many places where the road surface was so bad that vehicles had made a new dirt road alongside the actual road. For some reason, there were no locks on public bathroom doors, which was unsettling. The crazy tariff Argentina puts on everything make the country very expensive, and there is not much in the way of local-made because of this. We broke down here more than any other country, a total of three times.
Some things we recommend:
Antofagasta de la Sierra Department

Argentinian Patagonia! This is where Fitz Roy and Perito Moreno Glacier live

Iguazu Falls. The Argentinian side was better than the Brazilian side

The Art. Argentina has some great art, street art, and ancient art

The olive oil from Mendoza

There was so much wildlife in so many areas of Argentina!

The Pumice Giants
