We have a weekend in the middle of our work trip where we visit the San Francisco zoo, to play with the new camera lenses we bought. KoKo is now irrationally obsessed with giraffes. Our favorite activity, Friend Dinner, takes place at a Mexican restaurant (OMG, we’ve missed Mexican food!) to round out our weekend.

And just like that, we’re on a (very uneventful) flight back to Houston, followed by one more to Sao Paulo. Like always, we only fly red eye back, so we are wrecked when we get off the plane at 9:30am Sunday. We started at 11am on Saturday morning. The truck is exactly as we left it. Well, almost….our roof leak and the humidity caused mold to sprout from our floor mats in the front seats. The roof has leaked water for years due to the holes from the roof rack. Normally it’s not an issue, because the truck doesn’t normally sit closed up for long periods of time in the rain….oops. The dogs are SUPER excited to see us again. We get the truck into camping position, and take a nap, the thing you’re not supposed to do when trying to acclimate to a time zone. We have little water and little food in the truck, but napping kind of solves the need to deal with that right now.
The cats may be excited we’re back as well. KoKo gets to pet the big orange one, a Siamese-esque looking one, and the blind one! But…the problem with cats is that they do cat stuff…like scrambling onto our roof rack at 3am, making a terrible racket and scaring us awake. Kind of…We slept all day, so we were awake all night. Trying to get on this time zone is hard….we sleep quite late, and are in a fog most of the day. We do manage to get everything unpacked and put away, which was easy because we brought back almost nothing new this time. Today’s big adventure is discovering a turtle on the property. We don’t make it to the store… Instead, we ration our remaining water. In our non-perishable pantry there is a solid meal: rice, canned corn, canned beans, canned mushrooms and so so much taco seasoning go right into the instapot!

Once again, we are up in the night, and sleep way too late. It’s time to get out of here, and start heading back to Rio for Carnaval. Packing is slow going. Besides being tired, we need to remember how this whole thing works. To get back into normal Brazil life, we stop for Burger King for lunch. We have both eaten more Burger King in Brazil, and also on this trip than the entire rest of our lives before this. Still very much recovering from jetlag, the plan is to only drive a couple hours, back to the Ibis Hotel we stayed in on the way here. The food cart pod near the hotel sends us away with a selection of Italian food for dinner.
